Echoes from the Gorge: An Uncharted Odyssey from Kyoto to Chichibu

Echoes from the Gorge: An Uncharted Odyssey from Kyoto to Chichibu

Mar 9, 2024

Departing Kyoto left an indelible mark on my travel journey. I found myself in a quaint bath house, an unexpected oasis far removed from the city's famed temples and cherry blossoms. This retreat from the overwhelming throngs of tourists was a chance to pause and ponder - Kyoto or Tokyo, these labels seemed to blur as I soaked in the hot tub's embrace.

In that moment, I realized the power of choice in shaping our destinies. It was almost surreal, reflecting on the decisions that led me here, choices made in the midst of mundane routines. I questioned my search for serenity in Kyoto - was I truly seeking peace or simply following a well-trodden path?

Japan has a curious way of guiding me to bathhouses whenever I'm feeling lost. This visit was no exception, though the presence of parakeets and a brown tortoise added a unique twist. There, I understood the need to venture beyond, guided by intuition rather than the cacophony of Tokyo's allure.

Given another chance, I would eschew Kyoto for a path less traveled. My advice isn't to dissuade you from Kyoto, but to encourage a journey driven by personal discovery, favoring natural wonders over the constructed chaos of tourist hubs.

Now, let me share a recent weekend adventure with you.

In Japan, the subway rush and Shinkansen dominate conversations about travel. But there's charm in the lesser-known trains, which I categorize as cute, exclusive, or scenic. My train to Chichibu, however, defied these categories.

Laview train

Meet the Laview train. Unknown to me before this trip, its retro-futuristic, matte silver exterior and mango-yellow interior captivated me instantly. The journey from Tokyo to Saitama's Chichibu was brief yet comfortably spacious, offering a glimpse into Japan's urban-to-rural transition.

Arriving in Chichibu, I made my way to Nagatoro Station, ready for the next chapter of my journey.

There's something magical about cherry blossoms and even more so about the rich tapestry of fall foliage. Nagatoro Gorge greeted me with its natural splendor, reminding me of the layered beauty of a Dutch apple pie.

Nagatoro gorge

As I navigated the gorge, the wind and the river's whispers were my companions. Surrounded by ancient rocks, I felt connected to the earth's deep past - a time when prehistoric mammals roamed the oceans.

Preparing for a boat tour, I was enveloped by the gorge's tranquility and history. It was a moment to surrender to the flow of nature, a pause in my journey of self-discovery.

To be continued.
